Director's Note
Often when we experience plays that showcase people of color, we witness very direct storytelling. We KNOW something is good or evil. We KNOW Racism is bad. The answer is obvious and easy to understand. Fade is one of those shows where storytelling goes deeper than that. If I could describe Fade without mentioning anything about the plot, it is that it’s a visual representation of NUANCE. A statement I have said over and over again, during this rehearsal process was “Many things can be true at once, even if they seem contradictory”. We often see stories about characters making “the right choice” but real life is not as simple as that. Our real world is complicated and contradictory. We are all one circumstance away from making a “bad” mistake or choice. It is easy to say, “well if this happened to me, I wouldn’t do that” are we sure? I know the reason I was able to dive deep with our cast as we explored the world of the play, was because of my learned mistakes and “bad” decisions. I believe in my own personal experience and perspective, that we often forget that as human beings we are bound to say the wrong thing, make someone feel negatively, etc. Another thing that was said and emphasized often is that it is “how you learn and move forward from those mistakes and “bad” choices is what really counts”. That is what real accountability is. Everyone is capable of acknowledging harm that has been done to others and have a true commitment to make things right after the fact.
We are witnessing a wave of change in our theatre community. In order to make room for new generations, we need to change the format of “It’s always been done this way”. Theatre is very much systemically racist. It was popularized in the U.S when people of color were not allowed to participate and if they did, it was often segregated or an offensive caricature of their existence. In order to change the core of how theatre has always prioritized white comfortability and involvement, things need to be done much differently. We need to bring theatre to the people and not expect the people to come to us. We need to find ways to make theatre accessible. Theatre has always been considered a luxury. It shouldn’t be. I always felt that this is a medium for the people. I always felt uncomfortably out of place most of my theatre career until I started doing things the way I enjoyed them. My priority is kindness. Anyone involved in my production deserves respect, joy, empowerment and most importantly fun. I hope you all enjoy this production of Fade. I have never seen a collective group of people work harder than our actors, designers, and production team. I am incredibly proud of the work you are about to see. This production is one of those that I will often look back on with joy and pride. I encourage all of you to post, comment, and talk about what you saw. SPREAD THE WORD. Have chismesito with your friends about it. The more people know what we do, the more we can fill those seats and be in the community. Communal gathering is a non- Eurocentric practice that is, at my core, something I will always work hard to implement in my work.

Muy regularmente cuando vemos obras que enseñan las historias de gente no blanca, vemos historias muy directas en su mensaje. SABEMOS si alguien es bueno o malo. SABEMOS que el racismo es malo. La respuesta es muy obvia y fácil de entender. Fade es una de esas historias donde el mensaje es más complicado y profundo. Si puedo describir Fade sin mencionar nada de la trama de la historia, es que es tiene muchas capas. Algo que dije muchas veces durante el proceso de este show fue “Muchas cosas pueden ser ciertas al mismo tiempo, aunque parezcan contradictorias”. Muchas veces, vemos una historia donde un personaje hace la decisión “correcta” pero la vida real no es tan simple. La vida real es complicada y contradictoria. Todos estamos cerca de hacer un error o una “mala” decisión por una circunstancia fuera de nuestro control. Es fácil decir “Si esto me pasara mi yo no reaccionaria de esa manera” estamos seguros de eso? Yo sé que la razón que pude hablar con mi cast muy profundamente sobre esta historia fue por mi experiencia de hacer errores y “malas” decisiones. Yo pienso, con mi experiencia personal y perspectiva, que es muy fácil olvidar que todos somos humanos y es muy normal cometer errores, herir los sentimientos de alguien, etc. Otra cosa que dije mucho durante el proceso de esta obra fue que “Es como aprendes y continuas después de cometer un error o ‘mala’ decisión, lo que en realidad importa”. Eso es como tomar responsabilidad de nuestras acciones. Todos somos capaces de reconocer que lastimamos a alguien, y tener una responsabilidad pura de corregir nuestras acciones después.
Estamos viendo una ola de cambio en la comunidad teatral. Para hacer campo para las nuevas generaciones, tenemos que cambiar el formato de “siempre ha sido echo de esta manera” El teatro en los Estados Unidos siempre ha sido sistémicamente racista. Fue popularizado cuando la gente de color no podía participar y si lo hacían muchas veces era segregado o una caricatura ofensiva de su existencia. Para poder cambiar el núcleo de como el teatro en los estados unidos siempre ha priorizado la comodidad y participación de la gente blanca, las cosas se deben de hacer muy diferente. Tenemos que traer el teatro a la gente y no esperar que la gente venga al teatro. Tenemos que encontrar varias maneras de hacer el teatro accesible. El teatro siempre ha sido considerado un lujo aquí. No debería serlo. Yo siempre he pensado que esto es un medio para la gente. Siempre me he sentido muy fuera de lugar en la mayoría de mi carrera de teatro hasta que empecé hacer las cosas como yo las disfruto. Mi prioridad es la bondad durante mi proceso. Cualquier persona involucrada en mis shows, es regla para mí, tratar con respeto, gracia, empoderamiento y lo más importante que se diviertan un chingo. Espero que disfruten esta producción de Fade. Hasta ahorita no me había tocado ver una grupo tan trabajador y dedicado como nuestros actores, diseñadores, y equipo de producción. Estoy bien orgullosa del trabajo que van a ver en unos momentos. Esta es una producción que siempre voy a recordar con orgullo y felicidad. Los animo a todos que POR FAVOR posteen, comenten, hablen, y compartan el trabajo que acaben de ver. Va a ver mucho que chismear sobre este show, así que chismeen con sus amigos con un cafecito. ¡La comunidad es muy importante para mí y si la gente sabe de eventos como estos es más probable llenar el auditorio, y eso es lo que queremos!!!! ¡¡Estas historias merecen ser vistas y entreternerlos!!
